The Velveteen Rabbit

by Margery Williams

When the Velveteen Rabbit arrives in the nursery, the other toys turn up their noses at him. But an old toy called the Skin Horse shares a secret: toys can become real, but only if they are truly loved. The Rabbit longs for this kind of love—and finds it when he becomes the Boy’s favourite companion. Through a golden summer of games and cuddles, the Rabbit grows worn and shabby, but he doesn’t mind—he’s real to the Boy. Still, the wild rabbits in the garden don’t believe he’s real at all. When illness strikes and Rabbit is thrown away, he learns what it truly means to be real—and with the help of a magical fairy, his deepest wish finally comes true.
