Some Places More Than Others

by Renee Watson

All Amara wants for her birthday is a trip to Harlem to visit her dad’s side of the family. She’s excited to finally meet Grandpa Earl and her cousins, and to stay in the brownstone where her father grew up. Maybe then she’ll understand more about her family—and herself.

But New York City isn’t what she expected. It’s loud, overwhelming, and her cousins aren’t exactly welcoming. Her dad’s too busy to hang out, and still too upset to mend things with Grandpa Earl. As Amara uncovers pieces of her family’s past, she starts to wonder: even if she learns where she comes from, will that help her figure out where she truly belongs?
