This is a true story set in World War I. It tells the story of the Footballers’ Battalion which compromised of professional footballers who signed up after being called cowards. It follows Jack Cock, a player for Huddersfield. Jack’s dream is finally coming true—he’s made his professional football debut, and playing for his country no longer feels out of reach. But the year is 1914, and war is spreading across Europe. Accused of cowardice, athletes are pressured to enlist, and Jack finds himself joining the newly formed Footballers’ Battalion. A rumour of a match in Flanders offers a flicker of hope, but nothing can prepare Jack and his teammates for the horrors ahead. If they’re to play again, they’ll have to survive more than just a battle on the field.
