Scarlet Ibis

by Gill Lewis

Scarlet has always been the one to care for her younger brother, Red. He’s not like other children—he sees the world differently—and she knows just how to calm him: with their nightly story about escaping to the Caroni Swamp in Trinidad, where the sky bursts with flocks of bright, wild birds.

But when the two are separated and placed in different foster homes, Scarlet’s world shatters. She won’t let distance—or the system—keep them apart. No matter what it takes, she’s determined to find her way back to him.
