Granny Came Here on the Empire Windrush

by Patrice Lawrence

When Ava is asked to dress as an inspirational figure for school assembly, her granny suggests icons like Mary Seacole and Rosa Parks—but her classmates have already picked them. Then Ava opens Granny’s old suitcase and discovers a treasure trove of memories. As Granny shares her story of arriving in England on the Empire Windrush, Ava learns of the strength, courage and love it took to build a life far from home. And in that moment, Ava knows exactly who her hero is.
