The novel is set in 2032 and 1952. Polly and brother Joel live in Brighton in 2032 where a heatwave rages. They are sent to live with their Aunt after a misadventure whilst swimming. Polly accidentally ends up in 1952 after swimming in Truthwater Lake and experiences a very different way of life in that era.
