An Elephant in the Garden

by Michael Morpurgo

It’s 1945, and as the bombing of Dresden looms, Lizzie’s mother—a zookeeper—rescues one precious animal: Marlene the elephant. When the bombs begin to fall, Lizzie, her family, and Marlene join the wave of refugees fleeing the city. But as they journey through war-torn Germany, they gather more than just dust on their boots—they find unexpected companions, courage, and the will to survive.
